WHAT IT IS:
A neuropsychological evaluation is a detailed, individually tailored assessment of an individual’s cognitive and behavioral strengths and weaknesses. Information about the individual is collected from multiple sources and integrated with a selection of standardized test data. The evaluation generates an in-depth portrait of the individual’s cognitive processes, learning style, and social and emotional functioning.
A typical neuropsychological evaluation covers areas such as:
- intellectual functioning
- attention and concentration
- executive functioning skills
- memory and learning
- language, visual-spatial skills
- social thinking
- emotional processes and personality
- academic skills
WHO BENEFITS:
Neuropsychological evaluation is used in a variety of ways. The testing can answer a particular referral question, clarify a suspected diagnosis, provide a clearer picture of individual cognitive processes and difficulties. This evaluation can also provide a detailed understanding of behavior and emotional problems. Most importantly, the neuropsychological evaluation will create a deeper understanding of how your child/teenager thinks and learns, and generates insight into why problems may be manifesting, and your child/teenager’s unique strengths and resources.
Information generated in the detailed report provides a range of recommendations and specific interventions that will guide parents, classroom teachers, special educators, mental health professionals, medical providers, and occupational and speech therapists.
HOW IT WORKS:
An initial 45 minute appointment is made for parents/guardian to come in for a diagnostic meeting in order to gain a clear understanding of their child’s problems and concerns. At this time, it is requested that parents bring copies of prior testing reports from school staff and other specialists, and copies of current Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).
The testing appointment is then scheduled. The actual testing appointment involves 3- 5 hours of face-to-face meetings over the course of one to two days. Parents are asked to complete questionnaires and to collect current school reports from classroom teachers. The child, (depending on his or her age and the tests selected) will be interviewed, asked to complete rating scales, and will participate in a variety of table top tasks with breaks as needed. Play sessions may also be used to gather information about the child. Two weeks following the evaluation, a 45 minute feedback appointment is scheduled with the written report to follow several weeks later that will contain diagnostic formulations and recommendations for intervention.
CONSULTATION TO PARENTS AND SCHOOLS:
Recommendations for interventions that target specific social and behavioral concerns at home and in the classroom are provided within the test report. I work collaboratively with parents, school counselors, teachers, and school administrators to improve a child’s functioning within their social environments.
Neuropsychological testing reports can be presented at school meetings by the examiner to assist the school team in special education planning.
Educational recommendations for children and adolescents are provided that address learning issues and executive functioning concerns, which can be added to Individualized Educational Plans (IEP). I also create accommodations specific to 504 Accomodation Plans.
